Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) helps the client learn to manage difficult emotions by allowing the emotions to be experienced, recognised and accepted. As the client learns to accept and regulate their emotions, it becomes possible to change harmful behaviours and learn more effective ways of dealing with distress.

In simple terms, ‘dialectics’ means trying to balance opposite positions and look at how they go together. For example, in DBT, the client and therapist work together to find a good balance between the client accepting themselves as they are and making positive changes in their life.

Understanding and acceptance of experiences and emotions can help the client learn to deal with their feelings in a different way.
